Share Your Love with an Animal...

Most of you might have already seen this...
But just in case you haven't I wanted to be sure you did.
It's amazing and makes me cry every single time I watch it.
Nothing compares to the bond and love shared with an animal.
It's non-conditional, pure and absolutely fulfilling.

Personally, I sure would have preferred the music to be something other than the cheeseball Whitney Houston singing too loudly... that aside, it's a beautiful thing.

Fish Pedicures???

Fish pedicures are gaining popularity near the nation's capital after an Alexandria, Va., spa began offering them a few months ago. Here a customer has her toes nibbled on by a type of carp called garra rufa, or doctor fish, during a treatment at Yvonne Hair and Nails salon. The fish supposedly suck the dead skin off your feet.
How appetizing.
Okay... Seriously?? OMG... No. Just the idea of experiencing this gets me all skeeved out. Ick.
I shudder at what they must be charging for such a creepy treatment.

Burning to Watch...

I don't watch much TV. Actually, one might say I pretty much Hate what TV has become in recent years. Reality TV makes me want to induce projectile vomiting. I can't imagine why on earth folks watch crap like Survivor, Dog the Bounty Hunter, American Idol, The Bachelor.... hold that thought - I've got to take a heavy hit of Kaopectate. Just the thought of having to sit through the visual torture is causing strange occurrences in my bowels. Ugh. Really?? Folks. Watch. This. Crap??

Dancing with the Stars??? Intervention?????!!! OMG. I'd rather stab myself in the thigh with a pair of chop sticks. Repeatedly. Or partake in a little trepanation - anyone, anyone?

Now... before you start foaming at the mouth and urinating on the rug - just stop right there. Calm down, breathe. Note: nasty comments will be deleted. No insult is intended - afterall, I Honestly wouldn't think YOU could ever Willingly watch Reality TV. If you do so, well, there's not a whole lot more I can say to that. I can't, don't, won't ever understand how people can devote their valuable time on such tripe. If I wanted to watch people make utter asses of themselves for money I'd simply give up my full time Mom gig and go back to work. But before we witness a scene from Scanners let me tell you a little secret. I like really bad retro TV. You know... the stuff you can see on Nick at Nite [is that even still on?] and the Hallmark Channel. Shit like The Rockford Files, Simon & Simon, Barretta, Columbo, The Equalizer, MacGyver and my All Time Favorite Murder She Wrote [honestly]. And just to prove there are no hard feelings - I actually OWN every season of Murder She Wrote that's been released thus far [we're up to 8 now]. Pathetic I know. Still wanting to feel rectified? Does the fact that I basically have every episode memorized help? I suppose in the end, we all have our weaknesses.

I miss the fun and entertaining lame-ass TV shows of yester year. So you can just imagine my delight when I discovered Burn Notice on USA. It's got all the terrific elements of TV I like - for example: It's a real show - ya know with writing and actors and TV stuff. It's got Bruce Campbell [as Sam] to boot!! One of the best side kicks around if you ask me... well, except for The Closer's Tony Denison (Det. Flynn) and his pal G.W. Bailey (Provenza) - they're completely awesome and the only other current TV I watch.

Sure there were issues with the Pilot and the first season... Gabrielle Anwar's [Fiona] horrifying attempt at an Irish accent was gut wrenchingly bad - down right painful in fact. And what was up with Sharon Gless's wig?? I dunno... but thankfully they're both Long Gone now. Whew! It's like a modernized, cooler, hipper, quirkier, more cynical version of classic TV - and Jeffrey Donovan is wonderfully diverting as Michael Westen. The writing is really shaping up with the new season... like everyone is getting their groove on and the characters are seriously clicking together. Take a peek if you haven't already - there are Surely much Worse ways to spend an hour of your time ;) And despite what the following ad says - it can be seen on USA at 10pm on Thursdays.

What does your Car Say.... About You?

This week's "This is" theme: What makes me happy...
better late than never.

Odd tidbits about me...

I'm so very lucky. I own a car that IS the sum of all my parts = Retro, funky, foreign, adorable, Rad, sporty, original, quirky and entirely Too Much Fun to Drive. Yeah, if I were a car this is The car I would be. Lots of things make me blissfully happy. This car is at the tippy top of my list. Which BTW is a terribly long, loooong list... What can I say... I'm easy to please and I live a pretty charmed life.
It hasn't always been so, but it's So now ;)

I still remember The Day darling husband and I rounded the corner and I saw her for the first time. When folks speak of love at first sight - this is what they're talking about! My breath caught in my chest! OMG - Is it?? Could it be?? For sale??

It was!! And very quickly she was all mine!

This car is The Epitome of Me. It's my Classic 1973 Saab 96. It's Red and magnificent and makes me smile every Single time I look at it. Even now, after 17 years of ownership. We're talking He-Uge Dorky ear to ear goofy assed kind of grinning. It's fairly safe to speculate that you probably wouldn't ever want to see the absurd look of blissful joy that's plastered all over my face when I drive it.
Did I mention she's a 3 speed column shifter?? Once again - OMG.

I can't seem to find any digital shots of my sweet little ride and don't feel like scanning and uploading... so thank the photo gods for Flickr. This shot looks just my baby... except is missing the Totally Stellar Factory Original Driving Lights [on the front bumper] that Mine has. Such a lovely shot... wouldn't you agree? And believe me... if you've ever wondered what I'm like - this car completely says all you'd ever need to know about me.

Those who already know me --need only say Amen!

Maybe you can't possess the car that IS your metal construction counterpart.
But -- If you could though... what would that car be??

Chocolate Can Say A Lot... About You - as it turns out

Yes... It's been a few weeks since I brought you an utterly useless personality Time Waster!!
So get going... learn something new about yourself.
And don't forget to share your results with the class ;)

What Your Taste in Chocolate Says About You

You are sweet, mellow, and easily satisfied.
You don't like anything too intense and dramatic.
Deep down, you're a kid at heart... and you're nostalgic for the past.

You are a whimsical person prone to daydreaming.
Artistic and creative, you're always in the middle of a project.
While you are an inspiration to others, you can come off as flaky.

You love being by yourself and thinking. Developing your own theories and ideas is fun.
You feel lost when you're forced to be social. Being with other people can be lonely for you.

Just Say NO to Plastic Bags -- ReDuce, ReUse & ReCycle

Do You SAY ‘NO’ TO PLASTIC BAGS??

Dr. Marcus Eriksen and researcher Joel Paschal aboard JUNK set sail on a
2,100 mile voyage from Southern California to Hawaii June 1st, 2008

Here’s a very sobering and heart wrenching excerpt from an article by Summer Bowen in the July CONSCIOUS CHOICE magazine.

The amount of plastic debris currently clogging the world’s oceans - 3.5 million tons and (exponentially) growing - is certainly frightening’. AMRF has already made several trips to the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch,’ a swirling vortex of plastic twice the size of the continental United States

AMRF stands for Algalita Marine Research Foundation, whose mission statement is…

to let the world know about the giant plastic soup we have found in the Central Pacific Gyre and other marine locations so that something can be done to halt this increasing problem before it becomes worse than it already is. We do this with K-12 education programs, making presentations locally, at the state, federal and international levels, by the distribution of our signature video Our Synthetic Sea, and through every facet of the media.

The brief article outlined an amazing adventure that began June 1st, 2008, when Dr. Marcus Eriksen, Director of Research and Education for AMRF (chief sponsor of the voyage), and researcher and filmmaker Joel Paschal set sail on a 2,100 mile voyage from Huntington Beach, California to Hawaii, on a vessel named JUNK, made from 15,000 used plastic bottles with a Cessna 310 airplane body for the cabin. Anna Cummins is the land based third member of the team, and will post updates on the two-man crew’s adventures via the JUNK blog.

Do You ReDuce... ReUse... ReCycle the Trash You create!!!!?????

Be Apart of The Solution. Be Aware...
Help Rid Our Planet of the Problem.

Hello Cupcake... Watch Out Martha!

I'm so in love with this book. It's shamefully adorable! The only problem right about now is that we don't really know very many people around here, Yet. Least ways, not enough to warrant making up loads of cake... even if they are just bite sized cakes. We don't eat a lot of sweets ourselves and I've no idea what we'd do with so many. But Man, O Man... when the time is right I'm so gonna whip up a few of these Jim Dandies. I thumb through this delightful book almost daily, it's like indulging in pure eye candy. All the recipes sound so good and the How-to's make the creations look fairly straight forward and simple... what's not to love??!

Aren't they Mahvelous!!??
The Sharks & Life Preservers are probably my Ultra Faves!

As I sit here wringing my hands and daydreaming of the event that will enable me to create a few of these lovelies. Little H's Bday is in about 6 months... perhaps then? Hmmm.... perhaps, perhaps.

Crochet... Doily Making

Some folks may hear the word "Doily" and cringe. They may think old fashioned and lace with frills. But not me. I adore Doilies! My mom had them on every table while I was growing up, under every lamp. They're beautiful and stunningly elegant in Ecru or Ivory.

Some years back... I forget how many. 10? 15? Somewhere in the middle? My Gram came to visit me while I was living in Washington state. For Three Glorious weeks. We traveled all about like vagabonds during that wonderful visit... Seattle, Portland, Snohomish, Victoria BC. It was busy, busy, busy and quite delightful.

But truly... my most treasured memory from that visit - My Gram taught me how to crochet doilies. Over those three weeks together we made about 4 dozen doilies just like these [I probably made 3 while Gram made the other 37]. She was giving them as gifts that year... for her local Senior Center, I think. Sure, I already knew how to crochet... but had never quite figured out how to read the pesky diagrams on doily patterns. Mom had tried & tried to show me, but in the end it merely took a nudge from my Gram. She had brought this brilliant pattern with her and was very patient and willing to work through all the many mistakes I made. I really loved how delicate the stitches were, the teeny hook and the feel of the thread on my fingers. My first introduction to the art literally got me hooked! I'm a lot faster at working them up these days... but nothing like dear Gram - that woman can crochet like the wind!! It's amazing :)

This past week I decided to change out the stone tiles we've been using under our bed side lamps. I looked through about 50 doily patterns, all of which were very lovely. Yet once again decided upon this Divine pattern from Gram. It made my heart so happy to work on this pair!

While I worked away I could recall all the music we listened to during those weeks [Nanci Griffith was a Fave for us both at the time & I got her hooked on the Indigo Girls], the stories we shared and all the side splitting laughter we enjoyed. We've always gotten along like school girls - my Gram & I, despite our 50 year age difference. I cherish all our visits together but this one was a particularly magical time for me. And probably goes a long way to explaining why whenever I make a doily... 9 times out of 10 this is the one I choose!

This is... My Most Treasured Childhood Possession

A very special thanks to my Mom who dug up this wonderful photograph for me!!

This is: My most treasured childhood possession - which is sadly Long lost... but not forgotten. My little Campbell's Soup Girlie was so dearly loved. We were life long pals, until the very sad day she went missing. We moved around a lot when I was a kid... and regretfully I think she somehow got lost along the way. I can only hope she was able to make new friends where she landed and bring another child as much joy as she brought me. Hugs to sweet Cambie... I still miss her and think of her often - especially now that my little guy is just about this age ;)

This is a terrific meme I discovered on Jackie's blog... I simply loved the idea and thought it would be fun to play along. This week's theme of 'my most treasured childhood possession' was suggested by teacupsontreetops. I'm a wee bit late in joining for this week, but figure it'll all work out in the end. The 'this is' meme is hosted by Three Buttons.

Patchwork Skirt...

So although my back isn't exactly up to the rigors of sewing just yet and my Get Busy sewing time is fairly limited these days as well... Can't a girl dreaam. And when I do I'll dream about this skirt. I'd prolly want mine a bit longer, like somewheres just about what they call "Tea" length. Why on earth do you suppose they call it that anyhow?? Any ideas??

Regardless of whatever length you want -- Dammit Jim! It's too adorable, ain't it. Such a very, very Ultra cool way to use up all the scraps we've all been saving up.
Reuse, Recycle, Rejoice!!

Socks, Socks, Socks, Monsters.... Socks, Socks, Socks

Socks!! Normally, I leave them in a basket for Dahling Husband and usually he's quite swell at finding all their mates. But after working through more loads of laundry than I'd care to admit to, I've decided that My Sweetheart 'Somebody' simply has faaaaaarrr too many of Them. And they Must Go!

I'm drowning in socks!! What's one to do... Well, for starters... THIS - weed'em out!! I'm not keen at all on matching socks... it's Sooo not my idea of a good time. Not Ever. Not filled with rocks, Not crammed with clocks, Not stuffed with blocks, Not on a Fox... but Yes! Very good! In a Box!

So with that said, this is what's left. A nice sized small box over flowing with socks. Most of these are loners now, but still in good repair... What to do now?? Well, for starters.... THESE - use'em up!

Two Very Hip and Fun Festive Books! Now that I'm done wrestling with socks, I hope to wrestle up some time and get a few of these wonders whipped up!! Brilliant :) And with any luck, I'll have reviews for each title as well... I know, I know... it's difficult to contain your enthusiasm!

Sock and Glove
and...and...and...and...and
Stupid Sock Creatures

The Cost of Healing...

Well, after just Five sessions of Muscle Massage Therapy I'm starting to feel much better. Of course I still probably have about 3 -4 more rounds to go... but they'll be spread over a month or so, instead of compressed all into one week.

Oh BTW. Did I happen to mention that they run about 60 bones a session???

And it's probably NOT worth mentioning that insurance totally doesn't cover any of it either.
Big, He-Uge Shocker ain't it!! Swell eh?

I sure would have preferred to use that dough on something a whole lot cooler.

Stuff like this:

1) a fetching New Lens for my camera... or Two!
2) a Felting /Embellishing Machine
3) a new buffet for the dining room... if I could ever just find one that's 36" high.
4) a cool Zuca Bag... for hauling all our crap around on outings, plus I'd love the handy seat option - for while lil' H is dinkin' about.
5) down payment on a new Whirlpool Laundry Set
6) a handy dandy Dyson Animal... Cuz I have 3 dogs, 3 cats and 2 Males, I Need this bad boy!
7) down payment on one of these John Deere Humdingers... cuz the Dahling Husband needs love too.
8) a Sony DVD Camcorder... for my Sweetheart
9) to go towards new Patio Furniture... again, I'm too picky. Nothings quite right.
10) an Uber cool pair of MBT Mary Janes

I do suppose however, in the end, that being able to move about is cool enough for me.

How do Two Males = 47 Loads??

So perhaps you can clear up this little Physics problem for me. I've got One Husband and One Two Year Old Boy Child... so how on earth is it possible that during the week I've been laid up and unable to move about they've managed to produce 3 weeks worth of laundry? Just how many wardrobe changes would that take each day??! Yeah, it's a curious thing. I'm not exactly stoked about it.

ST/Dystonia... A Wee Bit of Medical Jargon

WARNING: EXTREME WORDINESS
This post is shamefully long.
It contains entirely Too, Too much medical information.
I'm extremely long winded about all the sordid details.
Please feel free to skim the following contents.
Take a potty break and treat yourself to a triple shot of caffeine before reading this blog entry.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just in case you were wondering where I've been... I didn't evaporate, nor did I fall off the edge of space. But considering what I have been doing either one or both of those options were looking pretty desirable.

Welcome to the Freak Show. That's pretty much how I feel about myself when/while I'm having what I lovingly refer to as an "ST Flare". Please note that I don't feel this way about Other folks with ST. Just myself. So no hate mail please. I've really got enough on my plate right about now, thanks. I've been in Full Flare (FF - my own term) since Sunday evening and just finished my 3rd day in a row of muscle massage therapy (MMT). I feel like I've been beaten to a pulp with a sock full of gravel. But hey, at least I'm finally able to move my head and can lift my arms high enough to wash my hair... we're all thankful for that one! And hey! Even though the stabbing pain is back between my shoulder blades and not to mention that computer time is utterly forbidden at the moment -- I just couldn't wait another day to update the ol' blog :)
My priorities are so totally straight.

I don't want this to read like a medical paper... but I'm always surprised by how few people really know about or have even heard of this condition. And since I've just suffered from my 2nd major "ST Flare" in 4 months I thought I'd share some information about it. The condition is actually not all that rare & who knows, perhaps you know someone who is suffering and hasn't received a proper diagnosis. Here's hoping this helps someone out in the vastness we call the internet.

In a nutshell - have you ever woke up in the morning with a really stiff neck? Like you slept on it all wrong and now feel like a dried up pretzel? Have you ever had a charlie horse? So bad you wanted to scream like a banshee and stab away at the pain with a dull knife? Well dear friends, multiply that by about 1000 and try to imagine while all this is going on your head is contorted backwards (so that you're facing the ceiling), your shoulders are up around your ears, your arms are perched in a permanent C3PO pose and in order to breath you have to pant like dog. Charming eh? Yeah, welcome to ST dear readers :) It's pure joy and not the prettiest of pictures.

Spasmodic torticollis (ST), also called torticollis or cervical dystonia, is a painful condition in which your neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing your head to twist or turn to one side. Sometimes the contractions are sustained and other times the neck muscles spasm, causing a repetitive, jerky movement of your head. [this rarely happens to me because my muscles are too tight and locked up for any mobility] The pain in most cases is severe. Trying to do any of the common (taken for granted) everyday things such as sitting, standing, walking, bending over, squatting down, lying down, and eating all become extremely difficult. Not to mention very, very, very painful. Actually when you're in FF you should just Forgetta Boutit!

Did I mention painful? Yeah, oh good.

Spasmodic torticollis is a form of dystonia. There are various types of dystonia, identified by where they occur in your body and what causes them. All involve involuntary and intermittent muscle contractions that cause repetitive, often twisting movements, which produce sustained abnormal postures. Dystonias involving only one limb or body part (trunk, neck, face) are referred to as "focal." -- this little tidbit is rather misleading. All of my FF's include the following muscle groups that are involved with complete and total lock up: Both shoulders and upper arms, my neck, upper back and most recently the muscles around my rib cage. Spasmodic torticollis is the most common type of focal dystonia. So I guess my "focal" region keeps growing?

WHAT CAUSES ST?
Nobody knows for sure. It is idiopathic in origin (unknown). Although genetic studies are ongoing, heredity, at this time, occurs in no more than 5-10% of those surveyed. An accident, or a trauma of some kind, can trigger its onset. In approximately 50% of the ST population, there is a family history of hand or head tremors (familial or essential tremors).

Some medical people believe ST’rs are born with a predisposition to the torticollis/dystonia gene and somewhere along life’s path, it is triggered by the aforementioned causes. ST affects movement only and is not life threatening. As a result of this chronic problem ST can affect personality. Therefore, help and support are often needed by family and friends.

WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS MUSCLES INVOLVED?
Please note the side and back views of the muscle system from the neck on down. The main muscles, but not the only ones, that are most prominently involved, are the sterno-cleidomastoid, trapezius, levator scapulae and splenius capitis. On occasion, when the muscles in the neck contract, they can cause tightness and contractions in the whole body.

As mentioned earlier, ST is also known as cervical dystonia. Dystonia is the generic and/or family name and means abnormal muscle tone. There are many different forms of dystonia. All of them are referred to as “focal” forms. ST, or cervical dystonia, is one of them.

My doctor summed it up like this: "Your muscles are senile. They can't remember what they're suppose to be doing and often get confused quite easily. They think their normal state is to be fully engaged or "on" full time. It's like a charlie horse magnified about 1000 times and on speed. Because it's so fast and intense muscular knots are formed very quickly because the spasm keeps the muscle continuously "on". Normally, even when doing heavy lifting, no muscle is working continuously. Instead, as the body moves in normal activities, different muscles cycle on and off. Muscles are not designed for this continuous work. After varying amounts of time the muscle overloads and forms these knots. These muscle knots are often referred to myofascial trigger points." For me, I start to experience trigger point knots forming within about 5 - 10 minutes once a Flare is triggered.

With all that said I'm very, very lucky. There are lots of folks whose condition is far worse than mine. They live in FF every day. I was diagnosed nearly 7 years ago and at that time was told it was a degenerate disorder... so the outlook appeared to be fairly grim. However, throughout the past few years, that idea has been replaced (thank heavens) and most feel it's a condition that usually won't progress past a certain stage. But what "stage" that is, no one seems to know. Although my diagnosis was confirmed 7 years ago I know that I've suffered with milder symptoms since my late teens and the condition has just slowly progressed to what it is today. I can't remember a time when my trapezius muscles weren't tense and solid as a rock. I have the Retrocollis ST variety.

I experience FF's about 4-8 times a year, but ST is always present. I have limited mobility in my neck and often experience pain, numbness and sporadic twitches every day. But I can live with them, it just means that I often move about like I've got a rod where my spine used to be and have great difficulty looking behind me. Sometimes a FF just happens, I move in a certain way, or sleep in a certain way, stretch in a certain way... like they say - Some days chicken, some days shit.

What works for me: I do my best to not encourage FFs. Which yes, can happen at any time - but I feel certain activities act as a catalyst for full fledged lock ups. Things like sitting too long in the car, sewing for long periods of time, too much computer time... all things I love to do - but have to limit to avoid the risk. But like all things, sometimes even the best laid plans can get hit broadside by life. I also routinely have MMT 2-4 times a month. And when MMT just can't battle the spasms or the pain I've had fairly good success with trigger point injections and Valium. The shots aren't very painful, but my last set required 27 shots. One at each end of each muscle and one or two in each major knot. It's my least favorite, the MMT makes me incredibly sore but I prefer it to being loaded up with meds.

So there you have it... most of these facts can be found peppered throughout the internet and from the ST/Distonia Website. Expand your horizons and pay them a visit. Their site didn't exist when I was first diagnosed and am so thrilled it is available now!
